All Los Cabos beaches closed under black flag due to rain
Municipal Civil Protection keeps up preventive patrols; in Cabo San Lucas, road repairs continue on Misioneros Ave., the road to La Candelaria and the Jacarandas neighborhood.
All beaches in the municipality of Los Cabos remain closed under a black flag on Wednesday, October 28, as a precaution following localized rains across the region. The Municipal Civil Protection and Risk Management Department announced the measure and asked residents and visitors to stay out of the water.
The department is patrolling different parts of the municipality to identify hazards and respond to residents' reports. According to the city government, the patrols will continue on an ongoing basis throughout the rainy season.
What a black flag means
A black flag is the highest level of the beach warning system: entering the sea is prohibited, not just discouraged. It applies to swimmers, surfers and shore-based recreation alike, along the tourist corridor and on beaches in Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo.
After heavy rain, arroyos (seasonal streams) carry mud, branches and debris to the coast, and surf conditions can change quickly. That is why the closure may stay in place even after skies clear; wait for the official reopening notice.
Roads under repair in Cabo San Lucas
Meanwhile, the Public Services Department has heavy equipment working on Misioneros Avenue, the main access to the Las Palmas neighborhood, as well as Nicolás Tamaral Avenue, the road to La Candelaria, streets in the Jacarandas neighborhood and Libertad Street. Public Services district coordinator José Ramón Sánchez Guluarte asked drivers in those areas for patience.
He said the work will continue on an ongoing basis until every affected road has been repaired. The effort is coordinated with municipal delegate Karina de la O Uribe and Public Services director general Ernesto Montaño Castro.
What to do
- Do not cross arroyos or running water, on foot or by car.
- Avoid flooded streets and follow warning signs.
- If you are heading to Las Palmas, Jacarandas or the road to La Candelaria, consider alternate routes while machinery is operating.
- For any emergency, call 9-1-1.
The closure comes on top of Wednesday's school suspension in Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo, ordered by the State Civil Protection Council after heavy rain on Tuesday afternoon and evening.
