Los Cabos issues preventive notice for thunderstorms and wind gusts up to 50 km/h
Municipal Civil Protection urges residents to secure loose objects and stay out of flowing arroyos.
The Los Cabos municipal government issued a preventive notice on October 25, 2026, for forecast rain showers with lightning across Baja California Sur, with winds of 10 to 20 km/h and gusts of 30 to 50 km/h. The notice covers Cabo San Lucas, San José del Cabo and the tourist corridor.
According to the Municipal Directorate of Civil Protection and Risk Management, the forecast is based on data from Mexico's National Water Commission (Conagua) and the National Weather Service (SMN), issued at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday. The weather pattern affects northwestern and northern Mexico, including Baja California Sur.
What Civil Protection recommends
- Secure objects the wind could lift, such as tarps, empty water tanks, sheet metal and planters.
- Do not shelter under trees during thunderstorms.
- Drive with extra caution, especially on the Transpeninsular Highway and dirt roads.
- Do not cross arroyos or flowing channels, on foot or by car.
Why it matters locally
Many neighborhoods on the outskirts of Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo are crossed by arroyos that stay dry most of the year. A short downpour can turn them into fast-moving streams within minutes, which is why authorities repeat the warning every season.
The notice comes eleven days after Tropical Storm Simon stalled 435 kilometers from Cabo San Lucas, according to state Civil Protection updates at the time. The Pacific hurricane season officially ends on November 30, so monitoring continues.
What to do
Check road conditions before heading out and postpone non-essential trips. If you live near an arroyo, keep IDs in a waterproof bag, a flashlight and medication ready. In an emergency, dial 911.
