Rehabilitation of 5 de Febrero Boulevard in La Paz begins Tuesday; one side will carry two-way traffic

Rehabilitation of 5 de Febrero Boulevard in the city of La Paz begins Tuesday, October 27, with a first stage running from Hermenegildo Galeana Street toward Juan Domínguez Cota. While work is under way, the opposite side of the boulevard will temporarily carry traffic in both directions, according to the state Secretariat of Urban Planning, Infrastructure, Mobility, Environment and Natural Resources (SEPUIMM).
The project represents an investment of 3.3 million pesos, the state agency said. Israel Soria Villa, director of Road Infrastructure and Urban Mobility, said the work is part of the state government's Road Maintenance Program (Programa de Atención de Vialidades).
What changes for drivers
With only one side of the boulevard open in both directions, road capacity in the work zone is effectively cut in half. SEPUIMM asked drivers to proceed with caution, follow instructions from on-site crews and consider alternate routes to avoid delays.
The agency did not specify work hours or how long this first stage will last, nor how many stages the full project will have. Residents should watch for new official notices before planning rush-hour trips.
Practical tips
- Leave early if your daily route crosses 5 de Febrero Boulevard between Galeana and Domínguez Cota, especially during school and office start times.
- Stay in your lane in the two-way section: passing or drifting into the opposing lane raises the risk of head-on collisions.
- Use parallel streets when possible to ease congestion in the work zone.
- Slow down near machinery and workers.
Context: streets worn by the rainy season
The project follows a rainy season that left widespread pavement damage in the state capital. The La Paz city government reported on October 21 that more than 8,200 potholes had been repaired during the season, at a pace of 300 to 400 per day.
Mayor Milena Quiroga Romero said at the time that permanent crews were working daily across the municipality. According to the city, those crews include municipal Public Services, Public Works and OOMSAPAS teams, along with the State Road Board (Junta Estatal de Caminos) and SEPUIMM; locations covered included Santa Bárbara Boulevard, Bahía de La Paz Avenue in the Antares subdivision and the Península Sur neighborhood.
Unlike pothole patching, which fixes isolated spots, a rehabilitation covers an entire stretch of road, so it usually involves longer closures and detours.
