La Paz committee approves 16-peso urban transit fare; council sign-off still pending

The Municipal Transport Council set 16 pesos for the urban zone and 18 for El Centenario and Chametla, but the increase does not take effect until it is published in the State Official Gazette.

Session of La Paz's Municipal Transport Council where the fare update was approved

La Paz's Municipal Transport Council approved a fare update for the shared-taxi service on August 27, 2026, setting it at 16 pesos for the urban zone and 18 pesos for the El Centenario and Chametla routes. The measure is not yet in effect: it requires additional steps before it can be charged.

According to the city government, the decision was made during the council's Second Ordinary Session, chaired by acting mayor Amor Fenech Montaño. Ninth councilor and Transport Commission member Javier Bustos Alvarado said the adjustment responds to rising operating costs, "particularly fuel."

For riders, the key point is that the new fare is not yet enforceable. The Transport Commission will first carry out a public review of the proposal and then submit it to the City Council for analysis and approval; only after publication in the State Official Gazette will it take effect. Until then, paying more than the current fare is not mandatory.

Riders should keep this reference in mind to push back if an operator charges the new amount before the process is complete. Any abuse in charging can be reported to the municipal Transport Directorate, the body that regulates the shared-taxi service in the municipality.

Shared transit is the main way for thousands of Sudcalifornians to travel between downtown La Paz and the El Centenario and Chametla districts, so a fare change directly affects the daily spending of students and workers. The city did not specify the previous fare or dates for the next stages of the process, which will be set once the proposal reaches the City Council.
