La Paz keeps its Civil Protection Council in permanent session for hurricane season
The city reviewed its temporary shelters and urged residents to follow only official channels for weather alerts.
The La Paz city government said it is keeping its Municipal Civil Protection Council in permanent session as part of the Hurricanes 2026 operation, to strengthen coordination for rain, winds and tropical cyclones. The measure was announced on August 20, following the rainfall recorded the early morning of the previous Tuesday.
According to municipal Civil Protection, temporary shelters were inspected and are in adequate condition to operate when they need to be opened. The operation includes direct communication with the delegations and coordination with security and emergency corps.
The local Conagua director, Julio César Villarreal Trasviña, presented a weather report during the session, while the state Civil Protection undersecretary, Héctor Amparano Herrera, explained the behavior of the "Torito" system that brought the recent rain.
Municipal Civil Protection director Francisco Cervantes Navarro reported on the shelters' status. Officials recalled that September and October are the most active stage of hurricane season for the southern peninsula.
As a practical guide for residents: keep important documents in a waterproof bag, along with water and non-perishable food for at least three days, and identify the temporary shelter closest to home. During heavy rain, do not cross arroyos or flooded streets, whether on foot or by vehicle.
Residents should stay informed only through the official channels of Conagua and state and municipal Civil Protection, which issue verified forecasts and alerts during the season.
