La Paz rolls out a school-zone traffic plan and School Carousel for the return to class on avenues like Forjadores
Traffic officers manage flow at drop-off and pickup hours; the city asks drivers not to double-park in front of schools.
The La Paz municipal government launched a Return-to-School traffic operation on Monday, August 31, with traffic officers on the ground and a School Carousel to speed up student drop-off and pickup during peak congestion, the General Directorate of Road Safety and Transport reported.
The plan focuses on the busiest points during school entry and dismissal: Forjadores boulevard, the new bypass —from the junction with the Los Planes highway to Colosio boulevard—, a stretch of the Santiago Oceguera bypass and other school crossings around the municipality.
Authorities asked drivers to avoid double-parking, not to block sidewalks, to respect drop-off and pickup zones for children, wear seat belts, observe speed limits and yield to pedestrians. "We invite you to take preventive measures such as wearing your seat belt and leaving with enough time," said Francisco Ramírez, general director of Road Safety and Transport.
As an alternative for families, the Tiburón Urbano transit system keeps a preferential fare of 6 pesos for students on its air-conditioned, real-time-monitored buses, an option to cut private-car use in the most saturated school areas.
How to avoid trouble: leave early during the first week of class, drop off and pick up children only in marked zones, and keep backpacks inside the vehicle to speed up exits. In School Carousel areas, follow the instructions of traffic staff, who give priority to students' pedestrian flow.
The operation will continue through the first weeks of the school year, when traffic at school entrances tends to intensify. The city asked residents to report traffic incidents and to respect the temporary signage placed at priority crossings.
