La Paz's Tiburón Urbano transit reaches 2.8 million rides in two years
The city bus system marks two years with 20 buses, three routes and electronic fare payment; the municipality reports 2,888,729 rides since launch.
La Paz's public transit system, Tiburón Urbano, has logged 2,888,729 rides two years after its launch, the City of La Paz reported. The service began on August 19, 2024, and now runs 20 buses across three routes within the urban area.
According to the municipal government, the buses feature air conditioning, onboard video surveillance and real-time GPS tracking that riders can follow through the App La Paz mobile app. They also include reserved seats for pregnant women, people with disabilities and older adults.
The three current routes link neighborhoods across the city: SMT 01 runs from Camino Real to Vinoramas; SMT 01B, from Camino Real to Márquez de León; and SMT 02, from Vista Real to the Panteón. Fares are paid electronically with a prepaid card that riders top up through the same app.
"This transit system is part of the vision that mayor-on-leave Milena Quiroga Romero had to improve mobility in our city," said Amor Fenech Montaño, the official currently in charge of the Municipal Presidency.
The city said new buses are expected in the coming months as part of federal support for municipal transit.
For riders, the App La Paz is the key tool: beyond tracking buses in real time, it lets users reload the prepaid card without visiting a physical booth and check each route's path before boarding. First-time riders can find their nearest stop by identifying which of the three routes —SMT 01, SMT 01B or SMT 02— serves their neighborhood. The service is the first modern urban transit network with electronic payment and satellite monitoring to operate permanently in the state capital.
