Hurricane Rachel: temporary shelters and staging points in Los Cabos
The city opened four shelters in San José del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas plus seven staging points; no evacuation has been ordered so far.
Los Cabos has four temporary shelters open and seven staging points in Cabo San Lucas because of Hurricane Rachel. The Municipal Civil Protection Council agreed on the measures at its Fifth Extraordinary Session, where it decided to step up prevention ahead of forecast heavy rain.
According to Carlos León Avilés, Civil Protection coordinator for the Cabo San Lucas district, "for now, no evacuation has been activated." The shelters are ready for anyone who needs them.

Staging points in Cabo San Lucas
The district set up seven points from which brigades would support any evacuation of vulnerable areas:
- Salón Ave Fénix
- Bodega Herrera (north zone)
- La Virgencita
- Cecyt 05
- Lomas del Sol church, covering Tierra Libertad
- López Obrador neighborhood, covering part of the Aguajitos arroyo
- Valle Colonial neighborhood
Jorge Sánchez Sandoval, municipal director of Human Settlements, said the teams were restructured to establish the seven staging points.
4x4 trucks and loudspeaker patrols
Alberto Rentería Santana, secretary general of the XV City Council, said the municipality's 4x4 vehicle fleet remains concentrated and available for evacuation work. Brigades are driving through priority areas with loudspeakers to alert residents.
What to do
- Find your nearest shelter today; don't wait for the arroyo to rise.
- If you live near the Aguajitos arroyo, in Tierra Libertad or in informal settlements, keep a go-bag ready with ID, medication, water and a phone charger.
- Never cross arroyos or flooded streets on foot, by car or by motorcycle.
- For transport to a shelter or any emergency, dial 9-1-1.
- Follow only city and Civil Protection announcements.
According to the state government, Rachel is a Category 3 storm moving away from Mexico, but it may still bring 75 to 150 mm of rain to the municipality.
