Port authority urges owners to register boats anchored in La Paz bay ahead of hurricane season
Registration is free and lets authorities reach a responsible person for each vessel before a tropical cyclone approaches.
The Baja California Sur Integrated Port Administration (API-BCS) asked owners of boats anchored in La Paz bay to register them immediately as a preventive measure for the 2026 hurricane season. The process is free and aims to ensure each vessel has an identified responsible party before a tropical cyclone approaches.
According to API-BCS, registration requires three items: the name of the owner or responsible person, a contact number and the exact location of the vessel. The agency receives the information at its offices at the La Paz fiscal wharf (muelle fiscal).
"Anchored vessels must have a registered responsible party," said María Fernanda Meza García, API-BCS director of Operations and Commercialization. She noted that six boats ran aground this week and have already been removed.
The port authority recommended checking the anchoring system; securing or removing sails, covers, flags and tarps; reinforcing lines and moorings; storing small units in dry marinas; and moving pangas to safe sites. These steps reduce the risk of a loose boat damaging others or running aground during a storm.
The Pacific cyclone season began on May 15 and ends on November 30. The National Meteorological Service forecasts between 18 and 21 named systems in this basin during 2026, with September and October typically the most active months for the southern peninsula.
Owners who have not yet registered their boat can go directly to the La Paz fiscal wharf to leave their details and avoid having their vessel left without an identified responsible party during an emergency.
