Los Cabos Civil Protection warns of rain and electrical storms on Tuesday

The municipality expects showers and lightning approaching from Cabo del Este; authorities urge residents not to cross streams and to secure loose objects.

Los Cabos Civil Protection warned that showers and local electrical storms are expected over the municipality on Tuesday, with rain beginning Monday night and intensifying before dawn. The precipitation cores are approaching from the Cabo del Este area, according to the Municipal Civil Protection Directorate.

The system will bring lightning, wind gusts and reduced visibility, conditions that make stream crossings and driving along the tourist corridor hazardous. The agency is monitoring conditions throughout the day.

"Precipitation cores are being observed approaching the municipality," said Municipal Civil Protection director Francisco Cota Márquez, who asked residents to stay informed only through official channels.

Among its recommendations, the authority stresses avoiding crossing streams, channels or flooded areas, driving carefully, taking shelter during electrical activity, securing objects the wind could tear loose, and clearing rooftops and drains to prevent flooding. Any emergency should be reported to 911.

In Baja California Sur, the rain and hurricane season runs from June to November, and the municipality's streams —dry most of the year— can fill within minutes when it rains in the upper sierra. That is why the leading cause of rescues at this time of year is people crossing fords and streams with running water. The practical rule is simple: if a stream is carrying water, do not cross it on foot or by vehicle, even if it looks shallow. It is worth mapping an alternate route to work or school in advance and keeping a flashlight and water on hand in case the storm knocks out power.
