Route 6 bus to reach Montebello in San José del Cabo; council orders fare study
At its 27th regular session, the Los Cabos City Council also unanimously approved the path toward a municipal mental health center.
The Los Cabos City Council approved extending public transit Route 6 so it serves the Montebello subdivision in San José del Cabo. The decision was made at the council's 27th regular public session, the city reported on October 6, 2026.
The extension was first endorsed by the council's Public Transportation Committee. For Montebello residents, it means a formal bus route into the rest of the city without relying on taxis or a private car.
Comprehensive fare study
At the same session, the council launched a fare study covering three types of service: urban, suburban and shared (colectivo) transit. According to the city, it is a comprehensive review, not a fare change that has already been decided.
The agreement on its own does not change what riders pay today. Any adjustment would have to come out of the study and return to the council for a vote.
Municipal Mental Health Center
Council members unanimously approved the institutional path to create a Municipal Mental Health Center. The next step is an executive project defining the technical specifications and requirements for the facility.
According to the city, the project will be included in planning and budgeting for fiscal year 2027. The goal is to expand specialized mental health care within the municipality.
Position on the non-resident fee
The council also agreed to ask Mexico's Congress and Senate to review the proposed 2027 increase to the Non-Resident Fee (Derecho de No Residente) paid by foreign visitors. The city asked lawmakers to weigh its effects on tourism demand, air connectivity and the international competitiveness of Mexican destinations.
In Los Cabos, whose economy leans heavily on international visitors to the tourist corridor, the fee matters to hotels, service providers and jobs.
What Route 6 riders should know
- Before changing your commute, check with the municipal transportation office or at bus stops for when the new stretch begins service; the agreement did not set a public start date.
- Current fares remain in place unless the council approves a later change.
- For questions, the city government is at Blvd. Mijares 1413, San José del Cabo, phone (624) 146 7600.
