The State Civil Protection Council canceled classes on Monday, September 7, across all education levels and both shifts in the municipalities of La Paz, Los Cabos and Comondú, as a preventive measure ahead of rains linked to Hurricane Marie. The order covers both public and private schools.
According to the state authority, the decision aims to "safeguard the integrity of students, teaching staff and administrative personnel" given the expected weather. The northern municipalities of Loreto and Mulegé were not included and keep normal school activities.
The National Water Commission forecasts rainfall of 75 to 150 millimeters, concentrated in central and southern Baja California Sur, with winds of 30 to 40 kilometers per hour and gusts of 50 to 70 kilometers per hour. Category 1 Hurricane Marie is moving off the Sudcaliforniano coast, and its wide circulation raises the chance of intense rain and high surf.
Civil Protection asked residents to avoid unnecessary travel during heavy rain and to take extra care near flood-prone areas and arroyo channels, where currents can rise suddenly. It also urged people to follow official notices, since the suspension could be extended depending on the storm.
As a practical tip for families, keep personal documents, medicines and a supply of drinking water at hand, and identify the nearest temporary shelters and safe routes to higher ground. In an emergency, the 9-1-1 line operates statewide.
