More than 400 officers deployed for Cabo San Lucas Traditional Festival through October 20

Police, traffic officers, Civil Protection, firefighters, Red Cross and the Armed Forces cover the fairgrounds, horseback parade, horse races and surf contest.

Security personnel deployed for the Cabo San Lucas Traditional Festival

More than 400 personnel and 20 vehicles are taking part in the security operation for the Cabo San Lucas Traditional Festival, held October 16 to 20, the 15th City Council of Los Cabos said. The deployment covers the fairgrounds and the program's sports, arts and cultural venues.

The operation includes Municipal Public Safety, Preventive Police and Municipal Traffic, Civil Protection and Risk Management, the Fire Department and the Mexican Red Cross. The Armed Forces and state and federal agencies are also involved.

What events are covered

According to the city, security covers the Teatro del Pueblo stage, the horse races, the Gran Cabalgata horseback parade, the surf tournament and the procession of the patron saint. The main venue is the Cabo San Lucas Expoferia fairgrounds, which also has rides and vendor stalls.

The city asked attendees to enjoy the festival responsibly and follow instructions from the officers on duty.

Weather did not stop the opening

On October 16, despite heavy morning rain in Cabo San Lucas, municipal Civil Protection confirmed the program would go ahead unchanged. "La indicación es clara, las fiestas van, se mantienen. Invitamos a toda la población a que asista a divertirse con mucha y plena seguridad" (The instruction is clear, the festival goes on. We invite everyone to come and have fun in full safety), said Francisco Cota Márquez, municipal director of Civil Protection and Risk Management.

The agency said at the time that the venues had been inspected and showed no major damage. Since Hurricane Trudy is forecast to pass south of Baja California Sur on Monday 19 and Tuesday 20, according to the U.S. National Hurricane Center, it is worth checking official advisories before heading to the last days of the fair.

Tips for attending

  • Plan your trip: large events clog the streets around the Expoferia in the afternoon and evening. If you can, use public transit, a taxi or carpool.
  • Agree on a meeting point with your family in case someone gets separated, especially children.
  • Do not drive after drinking. Municipal Traffic is part of the operation.
  • In an emergency, call 911 or go to any uniformed officer or the Red Cross station.
