The La Paz city government has issued 8,252 student passes for Tiburón Urbano, the municipal public transit system, giving reduced fares to students at 48 schools, from preschool to university. The figure was released on October 1 by the city's General Directorate of Road Safety and Transportation.

According to the city government, Route 1 serves 33 schools and Route 2 serves 15. CECYTE 08 is connected by both routes.

Which schools are covered

Schools along the routes include three higher-education institutions: the Autonomous University of Baja California Sur (UABCS), the Instituto Tecnológico de La Paz and the Technological University of La Paz (UTLP).

Technical and general high schools such as CBTIS 62, CONALEP Campus 16 and COBACH 01 are also on the list, along with several elementary and middle schools in the city.

What the pass is for

The student pass allows a reduced fare on every ride. According to the city government, the goal is to provide affordable, safe transportation and lower families' transportation costs.

The official bulletin does not specify the amount of the reduced fare or route schedules. That information is available directly from the city's General Directorate of Road Safety and Transportation.

How to get one

If your school is on Route 1 or Route 2 and you do not have a pass yet:

  • Go to the offices of the La Paz General Directorate of Road Safety and Transportation.
  • Bring proof of enrollment or a valid student ID and an official ID; check current requirements beforehand.
  • Ask your school office whether it organizes the process for students as a group.

Tiburón Urbano cards can also be topped up at the city's payment offices, including the one in Costa Azul.

Context

Tiburón Urbano passed 2.8 million rides in its first two years of service, according to figures released by the city government in August. The 8,252 passes represent a group of frequent riders who travel almost daily between home and school, mainly at peak class start and end times.
