Los Cabos begins equipping police with body cameras to record interventions

The Preventive Police and Municipal Traffic Department will receive the devices gradually as part of its accountability strategy.

Los Cabos's XV City Hall will begin issuing body cameras to officers of the Preventive Police and Municipal Traffic General Directorate to document their interventions, the department said as it made the rollout of the technology official.

The announcement was made by frigate captain José Antonio Galicia Mixquititla, head of the department, who said the devices will be handed over gradually to preventive-police officers and traffic agents to strengthen public trust, legality, accountability and respect for human rights during operations.

Using body cameras in police forces creates an objective audiovisual record of encounters with the public, which in practice helps both to protect officers against baseless complaints and to document possible abuses, and to feed internal investigations when a report is filed.

What it means for the public

  • If you are detained or approached by a Los Cabos officer, you can ask whether the intervention is being recorded; that footage may serve as evidence in a proceeding.
  • Complaints against police conduct can be filed with the Municipal Comptroller's Office or the corporation's internal oversight bodies.
  • Reports of possible human-rights violations can be routed to the Baja California Sur State Human Rights Commission.
  • 911 remains the single emergency line.

Rolling out the equipment gradually lets the municipality evaluate its use, maintenance and internal policies for storing and accessing the videos as it goes — key points for the measure to fulfill its transparency purpose rather than becoming a closed archive with no benefit for citizens.
