Baja California Sur's branches of government convene in Mulegé for 179th anniversary of historic defense
Governor Víctor Manuel Castro Cosío led the solemn public session recalling the town's stand against U.S. troops on October 2, 1847.
Baja California Sur's branches of government held a solemn public session in Heroica Mulegé on Friday, October 2, to mark the 179th anniversary of the Heroic Deed of Mulegé (Gesta Heroica de Mulegé). Governor Víctor Manuel Castro Cosío presided over the event, the state government reported.
The ceremony commemorates October 2, 1847, when Captain Manuel Pineda Muñoz and residents of Mulegé confronted U.S. troops during the Mexican-American War.
Who attended
Members of the State Congress and the Judiciary attended, along with Mulegé Mayor Edith Aguilar Villavicencio and civil and military authorities. The program included flag honors and remarks by State Deputy Teresita de Jesús Valentín Vázquez.
Middle school student Karla Fellicia Chávez Domínguez gave a presentation on Captain Pineda Muñoz, the central figure of the town's defense.
The governor's message
Castro Cosío called for keeping the state's historical memory alive. "We must always remember those who defended this land," he said.
Why the government moves to Mulegé
Every October 2, the seat of state government symbolically moves from La Paz to Mulegé to commemorate the episode. It is one of the most important civic dates in Baja California Sur and the reason the town carries the title "Heroica."
The date carries special weight in the northern part of the state, where the 1847 resistance is part of local identity. Schools in Mulegé, Santa Rosalía and Guerrero Negro often hold activities around the anniversary.
This week's context
The commemoration took place during an active stretch of hurricane season. Hurricane Polo made landfall on Tuesday, September 29, near Las Barrancas, in Comondú, and Hurricane Rachel kept Los Cabos schools closed on Thursday and Friday.
