Temporary jobs announced for Comondú families affected by Hurricane Polo

The state government assessed damage in Puerto Adolfo López Mateos and Ejido Santo Domingo; the Army and Navy handed out food aid.

Damage assessment tour after Hurricane Polo in Puerto Adolfo López Mateos, Comondú

The Baja California Sur government will launch a temporary employment program for families affected by Hurricane Polo in the municipality of Comondú, Governor Víctor Manuel Castro Cosío announced after touring the communities of Puerto Adolfo López Mateos and Ejido Santo Domingo. The program will pay for cleanup, debris removal and the recovery of public spaces.

The assessment tour was carried out alongside the national coordinator of Civil Protection, Laura Velázquez Alzúa. As immediate relief, members of the Mexican Army and the Navy (SEMAR) delivered food aid to families in the damaged areas.

Who took part

Also present were Vice Admiral José Chapa Téllez, commander of the Fourth Naval Zone; General César Omar Quinn Ponce, commander of the Third Military Zone; and Brigadier General José Luis Cruz Piñón, National Guard coordinator in the state. Comondú Mayor Roberto Pantoja Castro and the honorary president of the state family-services agency SEDIF, Patricia Imelda López Navarro, attended as well.

Velázquez Alzúa highlighted the permanent coordination and communication among the three levels of government during the emergency. The governor acknowledged the families of Puerto Adolfo López Mateos for following prevention measures in time before the storm hit.

What has not been disclosed

The announcement does not specify how many positions the temporary employment program will offer, how much it will pay, when it starts or where to sign up. No figure was given for the number of homes or families affected in the two communities.

At the end of the tour, the governor said work will continue with the communities to recover damaged spaces and restore families' living conditions.

Context and what to do

Polo made landfall in the first minutes of Tuesday, September 29, as a Category 2 hurricane near Las Barrancas, also in Comondú. Puerto Adolfo López Mateos is a fishing community on the Pacific coast, in the Magdalena Bay area, which left it among the places most exposed to the storm.

Residents of the affected towns who want to join the program can approach the Comondú municipal government or their local delegation to ask about registration once it opens. It helps to keep photographs of any damage to the home and to have official ID and proof of address on hand, documents usually requested in damage censuses.
