Baja 1000 pre-running begins in Los Cabos; officials urge caution in rural areas
The city reached agreements with San Blas ranchers to protect livestock and families during pre-race reconnaissance.
Pre-race reconnaissance runs for the BFGoodrich SCORE Baja 1000 off-road race begin Saturday, October 24, in Los Cabos. The city government said it stepped up coordination with ranchers in the San Blas community to reduce risks to families, livestock and wildlife on rural roads.
According to the municipality, recent rains in the mountain areas have made it difficult for ranchers to keep all their cattle penned. Loose animals are therefore more likely on dirt tracks and ranch roads in the coming weeks.
What drivers are asked to do
The city called on teams to drive responsibly at moderate speed, obey official signs and stop signs, and watch for families, farm animals and wildlife. Penalties for violations range from time penalties to disqualification.
Municipal Public Relations Director Víctor Manuel Montaño Gaytán took part in the meeting with ranchers. The city stressed that an injured animal that goes unreported is a direct loss for rural families.
If you live in or travel through the sierra
Residents of ranches and anyone using rural roads should take precautions while pre-running lasts:
- Keep children and animals away from tracks used by test vehicles.
- If your livestock is hurt, document it with photos, time and place, and report it to municipal authorities.
- On dirt roads, slow down at curves and dips, where visibility is poor.
