Dengue mosquito fogging unit driving through Cabo San Lucas streets

The Los Cabos city government's fogging unit is covering Colonia Pueblo in Cabo San Lucas on Tuesday, October 6, as part of preventive efforts against the mosquito that spreads dengue. On Monday, October 5, the unit worked the Panteón, Fuentes del Paraíso and Pradera Dorada neighborhoods.

According to the Municipal Health Department, the campaign follows recent rains in the municipality, which leave standing water where mosquitoes breed.

What to do when the truck passes

The city asked residents in the scheduled neighborhoods to:

  • Open doors and windows while the unit passes so the insecticide reaches indoors.
  • Keep yards clean.
  • Get rid of items that collect water, such as tires, cans, buckets or junk.
  • Cover or remove containers used to store water.

Why it matters after Polo and Rachel

Hurricanes Polo and Rachel brought rain to southern Baja California Sur in late September and early October; ahead of Rachel, state authorities forecast localized totals of 50 to 75 millimeters. Any container of still, clean water can become a breeding site for Aedes aegypti, which transmits dengue, Zika and chikungunya.

Fogging kills adult mosquitoes but is not enough if breeding sites remain at home. The most effective step is a weekly yard check: empty anything holding water, turn over unused containers and cover water tanks and drums.

When to see a doctor

If someone at home develops a sudden high fever with headache, muscle or joint pain, or pain behind the eyes, go to the nearest health center and avoid self-medicating. Warning signs such as severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting or bleeding require emergency care.
