Dengue: 16 fumigation trucks arrive in Ciudad Constitución, then head to Loreto and Los Cabos
Baja California Sur has 263 confirmed cases; the campaign will run two weeks with day and night spraying.
Sixteen fumigation units targeting the mosquito that spreads dengue began operating in Ciudad Constitución, in the municipality of Comondú, in a two-week campaign with day and night rounds. Once finished there, the vehicles will move to Loreto and then to Los Cabos, the Baja California Sur state government said.
Of the 16 units, seven were provided by Mexico's federal government through the National Center for Preventive Programs and Disease Control (CENAPRECE), and nine by the state government.
How many cases
The state has 263 confirmed dengue cases. According to the state Health Department, 83% are in Los Cabos and La Paz, and 15% in Comondú.
State Health Secretary Ana Luisa Guluarte Castro said coordination between the state and federal governments makes it possible to expand preventive measures. She added that the state government has fumigated more than 27,000 hectares.
Why now
Rain left by Polo in mid-September multiplied mosquito breeding sites, health authorities said. With Hurricane Rachel approaching the south of the state, water is likely to pool again in yards, tires and containers, which makes cleanup at home even more important.
What to do at home
Fumigation kills adult mosquitoes but does not remove larvae breeding in standing water. Each household's part is to:
- Turn over buckets, flowerpots, cans and any container that collects water.
- Cover water tanks, drums and basins.
- Throw away tires, cans and junk from the yard.
- Change water in pet bowls and vases every two or three days.
- Open doors and windows when the fumigation truck passes so the insecticide reaches inside.
When to see a doctor
High fever, severe headache, pain behind the eyes, muscle or joint pain and skin rash are reasons to visit the nearest health center. Do not self-medicate: anti-inflammatories such as aspirin or ibuprofen can make dengue worse.
If you live in Loreto or Los Cabos, the units will arrive in the coming weeks; the schedule will be announced on the Health Department's official channels.
