Los Cabos offers free dog and cat spay and neuter on August 13, 20 and 27 in San José del Cabo

The Los Cabos Municipal Health Institute will hold free dog and cat spay-and-neuter clinics on August 13, 20 and 27, 2026 in San José del Cabo, aimed at families who want to sterilize their pets at no cost. Services will be offered in block (manzana) 15 of the Vista Hermosa neighborhood.

To take part, each dog or cat must arrive after a minimum eight-hour fast from both solid food and liquids, an essential requirement for the surgery. Pregnant, nursing or in-heat females will not be treated, in order to protect their health during the procedure.

"Sterilization contributes to responsible control of the dog and cat population, reduces pet abandonment and promotes a better quality of life," said Juan Carlos Costich Pérez, head of the Municipal Health Institute.

Beyond controlling overpopulation, sterilization lowers the risk of certain tumors and reproductive diseases and curbs behaviors such as marking and fighting. It is also the approach health authorities recommend against abandonment and unwanted litters.

As a practical tip, it is best to arrive early on clinic day, since patients are seen on a first-come basis and spots per date are limited; bringing cats in a carrier or box and dogs on a leash makes handling easier. Those who do not get a spot on one date can come back on the others the same month.
