A hundred workers clean Los San Juanes cemetery ahead of Day of the Dead in La Paz
Jardines del Recuerdo and Perlas del Paraíso come next; Public Services asks drivers to take care near cemeteries.
About a hundred temporary workers hired by the City of La Paz are cleaning, pruning and weeding Los San Juanes cemetery to get it ready for families visiting on Day of the Dead. The work covers the interior, walkways, entrances and surrounding areas, the Directorate General of Municipal Public Services said.
Work at Los San Juanes will last more than 20 days, with intensive shifts Thursday through Saturday. Crews will then use heavy machinery to haul away trash and plant debris.
Which cemeteries are next
Once Los San Juanes is finished, crews will move on to Jardines del Recuerdo and Perlas del Paraíso cemeteries. That will cover the city's three municipal cemeteries before the busiest days.
Municipal Public Services Director Carlos Núñez Geraldo asked residents to drive with caution near the cemeteries during this period because of workers, vehicles and equipment on site.
If you plan to visit or tend a grave
November 1 and 2 bring the most visitors nationwide, and many families come weeks earlier to paint, clean or repair headstones. Some practical tips for the coming weeks:
- Thursday to Saturday, expect machinery and crews at Los San Juanes; consider other days if you only need to tidy your plot.
- When driving near cemeteries, slow down and follow staff instructions.
- Bring your own tools and take your waste with you so the cleanup is not undone.
- Don't leave standing water in vases or containers; it breeds mosquitoes during the rainy season.
Background
The cleanup is part of the city's preparations for the Day of the Dead season, one of the busiest times for La Paz cemeteries. The city has not yet announced special visiting hours for November 1 and 2; check official channels in the days before.
