La Paz Cyber Police logs 71 digital-crime reports since May

Online fraud, cyber harassment and identity theft are the most common cases; the city set up WhatsApp line 612 205 52 44 to file reports.

The Municipal Cyber Police of La Paz has received 71 reports of digital crimes since it began operating on May 19, 2026, the La Paz city government said. The three most frequent offenses are online fraud, with 18 cases; cyber harassment, with 16; and identity theft, with 10, affecting mainly users of social media, messaging apps and online banking in the municipality.

According to the city, the unit handles 11 types of crimes committed in digital settings. Beyond the three most reported, the list includes cyber extortion, threats, misuse of a person's image, loan-shark scams ("monta deudas") and unlawful debt collection, schemes that typically combine deception with pressure on the victim.

Reporting runs through three official channels. The main one is WhatsApp line 612 205 52 44; residents can also email policiacibernetica@lapaz.gob.mx or visit the Facebook page "Policía Cibernética Municipal de La Paz." Officials advise keeping screenshots, phone numbers, links and receipts, since that material serves as evidence to follow up on each case.

Alongside handling reports, the unit has carried out prevention work. The city says it has provided 273 citizen services across its channels, plus 32 talks and 2 information sessions that reached 1,691 people, including children, teenagers and parents. Another 500 or so were contacted through the "Presidenta en tu Barrio" outreach program.

As a practical guide to avoid these scams, be wary of messages that demand immediate action or promise prizes, and never share passwords, PINs or the verification codes that arrive by SMS or WhatsApp, since no bank ever asks for them. Before clicking a link or sending money, confirm the identity of whoever is contacting you through a separate channel.

If you have already been targeted, do not reply or pay, block the sender, save the entire conversation and report it right away to 612 205 52 44. In cases involving lost money or stolen banking data, it is also wise to alert your bank to freeze cards and accounts while the report moves forward.
