Book bus visits La Paz, Guerrero Negro and Mulegé Oct. 19-22 with 10,000 books from 12 pesos
Fondo de Cultura Económica's Letras Peninsulares route will stop at schools and public spaces with 2,000 titles and free cultural activities.
The Leandro Valle Librobús, a mobile bookstore, will tour La Paz, Guerrero Negro and Mulegé from Oct. 19 to 22 with about 10,000 copies of 2,000 titles, priced from 12 pesos, the Baja California Sur state government said. The bus will set up at schools and public spaces in those communities.
The visit is part of the Letras Peninsulares route, backed by the federal publisher Fondo de Cultura Económica and the cultural agencies of the Baja California Sur, Baja California and Sonora governments. In the state it is coordinated by the Instituto Sudcaliforniano de Cultura (ISC).
What you'll find
The catalog includes novels, short stories, poetry, essays and children's and young adult books. The stated goal is to expand access to books and bring cultural activities to the communities on the route.
Besides book sales, the program features poet Thiasol Sánchez, winner of the 2024 Hispanic American Poetry Prize for Children; oral storyteller Jorge Salvaje; and science fiction writer Pepe Rojo, along with music and dance performances.
How to find the bus
The official announcement does not list the venue or hours for each stop. For details, the ISC refers the public to its social media and that of its bookstore, Librería ISC, or to its phone line, 612 122 1116, Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
Because the tour lasts only four days and covers two municipalities at opposite ends of the state, linked by the Transpeninsular Highway, it's a good idea to confirm the exact date for your town before heading out.
For families and schools
The route includes the municipality of Mulegé, in the north of the state, as well as the capital. If you live in Guerrero Negro or the town of Mulegé, check the ISC's social media early in the week so you don't miss the stop.
With prices starting at 12 pesos, the Librobús is also an option for teachers and schools to stock classroom libraries. Teachers can ask the ISC whether their school is on the route or could host a stop.
