Los Cabos launches three-month weekday fumigation drive against dengue
The city will spray San José del Cabo and the state Health Department will cover Cabo San Lucas; the first area served is Tierra y Libertad–Ampliación López Obrador.
The Los Cabos municipal government on October 13 began a dengue fumigation program that will run Monday through Friday for three straight months, gradually covering every neighborhood, district and community in the municipality. The first crews worked in Tierra y Libertad–Ampliación López Obrador, in the Cabo San Lucas district.
According to the city, routes are scheduled using the official registry of confirmed cases. That way, crews reach the highest-risk areas first.
Who sprays where
A coordination agreement took effect on October 13. The state Health Department, through the vector-control unit of Health District 04, handles Cabo San Lucas; the Municipal Health Institute handles San José del Cabo.
Municipal Health Institute director Juan Carlos Costich Pérez said this is the first time the municipal government has carried out fumigation directly in Los Cabos. Crews will also move into communities in the northern part of the municipality.
What residents are asked to do
Mayor Christian Agúndez Gómez asked households to keep yards and rooftops clean, get rid of containers that collect water, and open doors and windows when spray units pass by. Without that cooperation, the insecticide does not reach inside homes, where the mosquito rests.
The timing matters: rain from this hurricane season, including Hurricane Rachel, leaves puddles, tires, buckets and uncovered water tanks that become breeding sites for the Aedes aegypti mosquito, which spreads dengue. Its eggs can survive dry for months and hatch with the next rain.
Quick checklist at home
- Scrub water tanks, buckets and pet bowls weekly.
- Cover any water containers you use.
- Turn over buckets, cans and planters you are not using.
- Throw out old tires, cans and junk that can hold water.
If you develop a high fever, headache, pain behind the eyes or joint pain, go to your health center and avoid self-medicating. For questions, the city takes calls at (624) 146 7600 and email at presidencia@loscabos.gob.mx.
