Los Cabos takes farm-support applications through August 31: here's how to apply

Farmers, ranchers and beekeepers can request water tanks, pumps, mesh fencing, fertilizer and tools at Plaza Arámburo in San José del Cabo or their municipal delegation, weekdays from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Rural producers in Los Cabos receive support from the municipal rural development program.

Los Cabos City Hall is accepting applications through August 31 for its direct-support program for the municipality's farmers, ranchers and beekeepers, first councilman José Manuel Larumbe Pineda and Rural Development director Raúl Montaño Ojeda announced.

The program hands out productive supplies and equipment: water tanks, motor pumps, roofing sheets, hoses, drip-irrigation tape, posts, barbed wire, chain-link fencing, shade mesh, sheep mesh, farm tools, fertilizer and hand carts, according to the list released by the municipal authority.

Applications are received Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., through two channels: in San José del Cabo at units 7 and 8 of Plaza Arámburo, and in Santiago, Miraflores, Cabo San Lucas and La Ribera at the corresponding municipal delegation office.

Document checklist before you go

  • All applicants: INE voter ID, CURP, proof of address and a price quote for the requested item.
  • Ranchers: additionally, livestock title and UPP code (Livestock Production Unit).
  • Farmers: location and photograph of the plot, or parcel certificate.
  • Beekeepers: UPP, certification and location of the apiaries.

One practical detail worth solving before lining up: the price quote. The application requires a written quote for the requested item, so producers should first visit a local supplier (hardware store, farm-supply shop or distributor) and ask for a document stating the price of the tank, mesh or equipment they need. Without that paper, the application is incomplete.

The UPP code, required for ranchers and beekeepers, is processed through the federal Agriculture Ministry (SADER) service windows; anyone who doesn't have one yet should plan for that prior step, since the livestock registry is how the authority verifies that the applicant actually produces.

The rural areas of Los Cabos — Santiago, Miraflores and La Ribera, among others — concentrate the municipality's farming activity, which coexists with the tourism economy of Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo. Municipal programs like this one aim to sustain local production of vegetables, livestock and honey against rising input costs.
